Isotopically Controlled Semiconductors
نویسنده
چکیده
A review of recent research involving isotopically controlled semiconductors is presented. Studies with isotopically enriched semiconductor structures experienced a dramatic expansion at the end of the Cold War when significant quantities of enriched isotopes of elements forming semiconductors became available for worldwide collaborations. Isotopes of an element differ in nuclear mass, may have different nuclear spins and undergo different nuclear reactions. Among the latter, the capture of thermal neutrons which can lead to neutron transmutation doping, can be considered the most important one for semiconductors. Experimental and theoretical research exploiting the differences in all the properties has been conducted and will be illustrated with selected examples. Manuel Cardona, the longtime editor-in-chief of Solid State Communications has been and continues to be one of the major contributors to this field of solid state physics and it is a great pleasure to dedicate this review to him.

Diffusion and Defect Reactions in Isotopically Controlled Semiconductors
Point defects in semiconductors play a decisive role for the functionality of semiconductors. A detailed, quantitative understanding of diffusion and defect reactions of dopants is required for advanced modelling of modern nanometer size electronic devices. With isotope heterostructures which consist of epitaxial layers of isotopically pure and deliberately mixed stable isotopes, we have studie...

The idea of quantum computation is the most promising recent developments in the high-tech domain, while experimental realization of a quantum computer poses a formidable challenge. Among the proposed models especially attractive are semiconductor based nuclear spin quantum computer's (S-NSQC), where nuclear spins are used as quantum bistable elements, ''qubits'', coupled to the electron spin a...
متن کاملIsotopically enhanced triple-quantum-dot qubit
Like modern microprocessors today, future processors of quantum information may be implemented using all-electrical control of silicon-based devices. A semiconductor spin qubit may be controlled without the use of magnetic fields by using three electrons in three tunnel-coupled quantum dots. Triple dots have previously been implemented in GaAs, but this material suffers from intrinsic nuclear m...
متن کاملOrigin of the residual acceptor ground-state splitting in silicon.
The residual ground-state splitting of acceptors in high-quality silicon has been studied intensely by different experimental techniques for several decades. Recently, photoluminescence studies of isotopically pure silicon revealed the ground-state splitting to result from the random distribution of isotopes in natural silicon. Here we present a new model that explains these surprising experime...

The introduction of stable isotopes in the fabrication of semiconductor nanowires provides an additional degree of freedom to manipulate their basic properties, design an entirely new class of devices, and highlight subtle but important nanoscale and quantum phenomena. With this perspective, we report on phonon engineering in metal-catalyzed silicon nanowires with tailor-made isotopic compositi...
